Spiced Roots Review: The Best Caribbean Food in Oxford?

If you're after the best Caribbean food in Oxford, stop scrolling and book a table at Spiced Roots in Cowley. We went in expecting a solid meal. We left genuinely struggling to name a favourite dish, which almost never happens.
Where is Spiced Roots?
Spiced Roots sits in Cowley, just outside the Oxford city centre — an area that's no stranger to good food, with plenty of solid options to choose from. Even so, this one stands out. Every table around us was full, and it wasn't hard to see why.
What we ate

We let our hosts for the evening, Melissa and Freya, pick their favourites from the menu, and the kitchen didn't put a foot wrong.
Starters
The smoked baigan and tomato choka kicked things off perfectly — smoky, sharp, and moreish, the kind of dip you keep going back to even after it should be finished. The trini doubles brought proper street-food energy, soft and spiced in all the right ways. Then came the tiger prawns, plump and beautifully seasoned. Three completely different starters, three genuine highlights.
Mains
The slow braised oxtail was the standout of the night. Fall-apart tender, rich, and deeply savoury — this is the dish that will have you telling everyone you know about Spiced Roots. The grilled kingfish steak held its own alongside it too, with a char and freshness that balanced out the richness of the oxtail nicely.
Sides
Simple, but essential: the plantain was sweet, caramelised, and exactly what the rest of the table needed.
Desserts
We went all in and tried the full dessert selection, and there wasn't a weak link among them — a properly satisfying way to close out the meal.
The drinks
Confession: this was our first ever pina colada, and Spiced Roots has ruined us for any other version. Smooth, perfectly balanced, not too sweet — we're officially converts. If you're a cocktail person, the drinks menu here deserves just as much attention as the food.
The vibe
Great music, great energy, and a room that feels genuinely alive rather than just busy. It's the sort of place where you can tell the atmosphere is as carefully thought through as the menu, and exactly why it's become such a popular spot in Cowley.
More than a meal
Spiced Roots isn't just somewhere to eat — they also run sip n paint nights and rum tasting events, so if you're after something a bit different for a date night or a get-together with friends, it's worth checking what's coming up.

The verdict
Between the oxtail, the choka, and a pina colada that's changed our cocktail order for life, Spiced Roots earns its place as one of the best Caribbean restaurants in Oxford. Great food, great drinks, great atmosphere — we'll be back, and we'd recommend booking ahead.
