Sticks'n'Sushi Oxford: is this the best sushi in Oxford?

We went four times in one week. Make of that what you will.

We didn't think sushi was for everyone — that is, until we tried Sticks'n'Sushi in Oxford. If you've been on the fence about Japanese food, this is the place that will sort that out.

Located on the rooftop of the Westgate Centre on Castle Street, with views across Oxford's skyline that make the whole thing feel a little more considered than your average dinner out. Good for dates, for groups, and for celebrating something — or just a nice dinner out.

The food

The menu divides between sushi and yakitori sticks grilled to order — hence the name. Both halves are worth your attention. These were our favourites:

• Ebi Bites — crisp, golden, gone in seconds.
• Tuna Tartare Bites — clean flavours, good crunch from the flatbread. Elegant without trying too hard.
• Hell's Kitchen Rolls — tuna tartare, shrimp, a smoky finish. Our favourite thing on the menu, and it wasn't close.
• Ramu Niku — lamb with spring onion, yakiniku sauce, garlic butter and soy sesame. Tender and well-judged.
• Aigamo Tsukune — grilled duck meatball with egg yolk in supreme soy. A first for us. The combination works better than it has any right to.

The drinks and service

The cocktails are Japanese-inspired and pair well with the food — not an afterthought. Service is attentive without being intrusive, and the staff know the menu properly, which makes a difference.

Worth knowing

We went four times in one week. The food held up every time. If you're looking for a sushi restaurant in Oxford that works for a date night, a birthday, or just a very good Tuesday — this is it. Book ahead.
